Holy Week

at Fountain of Life

Maundy Thursday commemorates the night when Jesus gathered with His disciples for the Last Supper, where He instituted the Lord’s Supper and gave the command (“mandate,” from which Maundy comes) to love one another as He has loved us (John 13:34). For the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), this day is especially important because it highlights Christ’s real presence in Holy Communion, where believers receive His true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. It also marks the beginning of the sacred Triduum (three holy days), drawing worshippers into the depth of Christ’s sacrifice, His humble service, and His steadfast love shown on the way to the cross.

Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, the moment when He willingly suffered and died on the cross for the sins of the world. For the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), this day is central to the Christian faith because it proclaims Christ’s atoning sacrifice, through which forgiveness, life, and salvation are won for all people. Though marked by solemn reflection, Good Friday is called “good” because it reveals the depth of God’s love and the victory Christ achieves through His suffering and death.

Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, marking His victory over sin, death, and the power of the devil. For the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), this is the central and most important feast of the Christian faith, because it confirms that Christ’s sacrifice on the cross was accepted and that eternal life is secured for all who believe. Easter proclaims the sure and living hope that, just as Christ is risen, so too His people will be raised and share in His everlasting life.
